Darwin Forest, the Dales and Peace

We’ve had a few days away near Matlock, in Darwin Forest and it’s been special.

The lodge we stayed in was so close to all the amenities: evolution pool and spa, supermarket, activity centre, mini golf, reception and pub.

With woodland walks and other activities you can do as little or as much as you want on site.

The lodge itself had a great kitchen, dining and living space, a games area with a pool table, there were 3 bathrooms, and a veranda with a hot tub.

We ate at the pub, Joe cooked two nights and we visited a century old fish and chip shop where the rain held off long enough to eat outdoors.

We visited the Heights of Abraham, taking a cable car up to the top of Masson Hill. Both Joe and I were anxious about this, but we did it! You can walk to different levels, explore caves, visit the Wombles exhibition (random) and enjoy the spectacular views. We brought a picnic with us, and there was a Punch and Judy show that River enjoyed. Georgina and I walked up the tower where the 360 views were awesome. River took photos with my camera and it was great to see the enjoyment he got from that.

The return cable car trip was easier than the one going up.

The rain came, much needed after the heatwaves this summer, and while it limited what we could do, it didn’t dampen our spirits, and the hot tub was well used.

Splash hour in the pool, and taking advantage of the spa facilities more than made up for it.

Watching the bond grow between River and Brodie is priceless, and seeing how they interact and Brodie copies River is heart warming. Brodie literally throws himself into everything with such gusto.

I always struggle to relax as it is, and when we go away, it can take a couple of days to get into the swing of doing less, and not always successfully. I did take the opportunity to do a few walks in the forest, which helped to just be, marvelling at how tall the trees are, how quiet and peaceful it is and not really seeing anyone whilst walking.

Here are a few photos from the last few days. I can’t recommend Darwin Forest lodges enough, all the staff who maintain the high standards, nothing is too much trouble. Derbyshire is beautiful and there are so many things to do, and other places to visit, until next time…..
